I used to spend summers with Verlyn on the family farm North of Bloomfield. We always had a good time. One summer we found a extra large fire cracker in Uncle Johns machine shop and decided to send a 5 gallon can up in the air with it. For some reason we could not get it lit. (Thank God) When uncle John saw us we were told that's not a fire cracker its a stick of dynamite that i use to remove large rocks in the field. When I was going over seas in my military assignment I stopped in San Francisco where he was stationed and we spent some time together. Later on we both rode motorcycles and had many enjoyable trips to the black hills and all over S.Dak. He was always a safe rider and fun to go on trips with. When Verlyn and his two sons would come up to Fargo and visit with me I would tell his two Sons stories about Verlyn in his younger years and they would comment "Dad you never told us that" I really enjoyed the three of them. He was a very special cousin and I have many many fond memories with him. Rest in Peace as it was great riding with you.  Del & Renee Hofer

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you! I was privileged to work under Verlyn at USGS while I was a college student. He was always so helpful and friendly! May God afPgive you peace as you cherish the many memories of him. Maxine (Hofer) Janzen

Sending sympathy to you Sharon, Bryan & Darin. You probably don't know me but I grew up attending the Emmanuel Mennonite Church from 1950-1970 and knew Verlyn's family. Several years ago, I started working our family tree on Ancestry.com and somehow found out that he was also interested in our ancestry. He used a different program which was customer friendly. We became e-mail friends and he provided me with all kinds of information I didn't have. He also sent me a DVD of the Bethel Church grave markers, which I use on a regular basic. I appreciated his family knowledge and kindness. I know your family will miss him a great deal, it's always hard to live without our loved ones. Carma (Tschetter) Zarneke
