William A. “Bill” Russell, age 82, of Huron, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at his home. As per his wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no services.

William A. “Bill” Russell was born December 29, 1935, in Parkin, Arkansas to Claudia and Al Russell. In 1953, at the age of 17, Bill entered the Marines and honorably served until June 1956 attaining the rank of Sergeant.

Bill lived a full life working in his younger years as a graphic artist and then later as an air conditioning repair mechanic. In retirement, Bill discovered a passion for writing. He wrote several fiction novels and short stories, a memoir of his father’s life, and for the past few years, he contributed weekly articles to The Plainsman newspaper.

In 2010, Bill met the love of his life, Norelle Bartel and they were married in June 2011.

Although Bill grew up in San Diego and lived much of his life in the Nevada and Southern California deserts, he loved living his last few years on the plains of South Dakota.

Bill is survived by his wife, Norelle; his brother, Dave; his daughters, Amy, Nancy, Becky and Jennifer; his bonus children, Roger, Cindy, Ted, Mel, Dale, Nita, Toby and Wendi; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

I was one of the lucky people who was around when Bill discovered his passion for writing. He joined our group Write On The Edge in it beginning and I remember our first summer when it was just him, myself and one other lady from the group but we still met every week and helped each other. Often we women would tell him his female character just wouldn't behave the way he had her behaving. He took it well though and I think he even listened. We missed him when he left because we didn't have many men in the group. I am glad he found the love of his life and had happiness.  Christine Howard" Moderator Write On The Edge, Yuma, AZ
